• In response to the growing Roman Catholic population at the Lakehead after 1945, Bishop Dignan of Sault Ste. Marie canonically erected three new parishes, prior to the creation of the Fort William Diocese.

• These were Corpus Christi and Our Lady of Loretto in Port Arthur (1950) and St. Elizabeth in Fort William (1951).

• The two new Port Arthur parishes were to alleviate the congestion at St Andrew's caused by a larger than capacity congregation consisting of approximately 850 families (4000 Parishioners).

• Corpus Christi parish church and rectory were constructed in 1951 on Red River Road, 4 km west of St Andrew's.

• Once officially opened in January 1952 with its first pastor, Father Regis St James (1911-1976), it was to serve Catholics in one of the finest residential districts of Port Arthur." - Provesana 2002
